Worker injured after falling down FPL turbine

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Doctors continue to treat a maintenance worker Wednesday afternoon after he fell several feet down a turbine and landed between some pipes.

FPL says the man was a contractor with Mitsubishi Power Systems of America based in Orlando. The battalion chief said the man was alert and awake before the Trauma Hawk flew him to St. Mary's. He says that was good indication that he would be ok.

The accident happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday at the West County Energy Center in Loxahatchee. It took rescue crews at least an hour and a half to free the victim.

They say the contractor fell about five to 10 feet down between some pipes while doing maintenance work at the plant. The special operations team had to be called in to help because the space was so cramped, they had to move between pipes to get to him.

FPL says they frequently practice these types of rescues for situations like this. "There's a lot of training that happens all the time at the power plants, especially safety training," said Greg Brostowicz. "So again, this was a very specific incident, a very confined space area where the employee was and had to be rescued from. So very specialized and important."

FPL says the incident remains under investigation.
