PBC looking to start 2013-2014 school earlier

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - District officials with the Palm Beach County School Board will vote Wednesday on the starting date of the 2013-2014 school year.
According to our news partners at the Palm Beach Post, district officials suggested starting on August 14. If approved, it would be the earliest start date for the school district since 2005. In 2012, classes started on August 20.
There are at least two reasons the school district is suggesting the early start.
Officials say they should start classes on Wednesday the 14 to help out younger students in kindergarten and first grade.
By starting on a Wednesday rather than waiting till the Monday of the next week, it allows younger students to have a better transition into the school year -- rather than starting on a five day school week.
They also say this starting date would help balance out the semesters. If schools started a week later than the 14, the first semester would be shorter and the second would be much longer.
According to district officials, the vote will take place after a workshop being held Wednesday afternoon which starts at 3 p.m.
