MARTIN COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Local law enforcement is also reacting to the new developments on Capitol Hill.
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder says he supports tighter background screenings and new gun trafficking laws. But he's against the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
The big quesion is whether he'll actually have to enforce these new laws. "There is disagreement on this as to whether the states can refute, local jurisdictions can refuse, to enforce these federal laws or not," said legal analyst Michelle Suskauer. "That's really going to have to be sorted out."
Sheriff Snyder also said the state could make changes to gun laws, which he would be obligated to enforce. But, he says, the chances of that happening are remote.
