Child burned after bonfire explosion

SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A 5-year-old boy is in critical condition after suffering burns from a bonfire explosion Wednesday night in suburban West Palm Beach, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

The incident happened at 7 p.m. in the 1700 block of 64th Terrace South, at Casa Del Monte Mobile Home Park, said Capt. Albert Borroto, spokesman for fire rescue.

The child's mother was not with him at the time of the explosion and authorities are trying to determine who was responsible for watching him, said Deputy Eric Davis, spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Margarita Garcia said she was walking to the home of a friend when she saw the 5-year-old and a few other young boys around a bonfire. Garcia said she then noticed one of the boys spraying something out of an aerosol can. He then dropped it into the fire.

"She said the little boy came to his mom and said, 'I'm burning, I'm burning,'" said Yailires Ramon who was interpreting for her neighbor Margarita who speaks Spanish.

Deputy Eric Davis confirmed that initial reports indicate the child threw some type of aerosol can into the outdoor fire.

The child was taken Delray Medical Center via Trauma Hawk.
