WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Florida lawmakers are closing in on a final vote that would mean game over for Internet cafes. It could happen as soon as Thursday.
If Senate Bill 1030 is passed places, like Palm Beach Internet Connection, will have to close its doors for good.
The Florida House already approved a ban on these businesses which are used for online gambling.
An owner of one of these Internet cafes compares the businesses to an "Adult Chuck E. Cheese", but state lawmakers don't see the innocent comparison.
Those behind the ban have called these "cafes" a "cancer" that has spread throughout neighborhoods around the state.
State lawmakers are also feeling pressure to shut these places down after an investigation into one company found its owners were running a $290 million illegal gambling ring. That investigation also led to Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll's resignation.
If approved, the law would be effective immediately.
