Jets drop Tebow

(WFLX) - Tim Tebow has been dropped by the New York Jets.

Tebow was widely expected to be on the way out for months, but now it's official.

The Jets released the following statement on their Web site Monday morning:

"The New York Jets have waived quarterback Tim Tebow."

Tebow (6'3", 236/Florida/Jacksonville, FL) was acquired by the Jets in a trade on March 26, 2012 from Denver and saw action in 12 games this past season. Originally a first-round selection of the Broncos in 2010, Tebow has started 16 of the 35 games he has played. For his career, he completed 173-of-361 passes for 2,422 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a 75.2 passer rating and added 989 yards and 12 touchdowns on 197 rushes.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow," said Jets head coach Rex Ryan. "Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward."

According to the "New York Post", the arrival of quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft may have been the reason for the drop.
