Family horse chained & butchered behind barn

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Police in Miami-Dade County are working to find out who butchered a family horse for its meat.

The female horse, named Destiny, was taken from its stall, chained to the back of the barn and butchered.

The animal's 3-year-old offpsring was nearby when his mother was killed.

The owner says the horse was family for her. "What people don't understand is that we have had this horse for seven years. Seven years for some people is nothing, but to us, it's a lifetime," said owner Raquel Torres. "There is no reason to kill a horse for horse meat; that's barbaric."

This is one of more than 50-cases of horses being killed for meat in the past year between Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
