PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It's your civic duty to serve on a jury if you're chosen, but with that service comes a burden.  It's a burden on your personal life, on your professional life and a burden on your finances.  Fortunately, Arizona's jurors don't have to sacrifice a paycheck to serve.

"They're eligible for what we call the Arizona Lengthy Trial Fund," said Maricopa County Superior Court jury administrator Candace Atkinson.

Atkinson said the Arizona Lengthy Trial Fund, or ALTF, comes into play if you serve more than five days on a jury.

"When the jurors reach that sixth day, then they can fill out a form. If they're eligible and if they prove to us there's a loss, then they're automatically paid," Atkinson said.

That pay equals whatever amount the juror is missing by being in court all day up to $300 a day.

"And we don't pay them more than what their daily rate is," Atkinson said.

Jurors have to bring in a pay stub and prove their boss isn't paying them while they're on the jury.  If the jurors are unemployed or retired, they're compensated $40 a day once the trial passes that five day mark.  On top of that, jurors get $.44 per mile for their drive into court.  CBS 5 News wanted to know where all that cash comes from.

"It's charged by cases that are filed in civil, there's a $15 filing fee that's charged on all cases and that funds this Arizona Lengthy Trial Fund," Atkinson said.
