SEBASTIAN, FL (WFLX) - After a Sebastian teenager made national headlines for her relationship with an underage girl, a Florida senator is pushing to change the state's sex laws.
Republican Thad Altman from Sebastian says he'll propose a bill in the Florida senate next year dealing with age limits.
Right now, it's illegal for someone 18 or older, like Kaitlyn Hunt, to have a sexual relationship with anyone younger than 16 years of age regardless of consent.
"You would like to think this wouldn't happen in our country: two teenagers, in a moment of passion, do something consensual, and suddenly one is facing 15 years in prison," said State Senator Thad Altman.
Altman says judges should be granted more power in a situation where there may be gray areas of the law.
He also says Florida's sentencing guidelines are too drastic.
