Animals rescued from Moore, OK now in Boca

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - Cries for help from Oklahoma brought 80 dogs and cats to South Florida this week. When the Tri-County Humane Society got word animal shelters near Moore were overwhelmed, they sent help.

Employee Matt Gaquer signed right up. "Let's go get whoever is in these shelters about to be put down to make room for the new guys from the storm. You can't say no to that," said Gaquer.

The group drove out on Saturday, and went to five different kill-shelters surrounding the devastation. "We kept driving to our goal. In the back of my head, I knew what we were there to do, but I felt bad for people I wanted to get out and help them," said Gaquer.

The group returned Wednesday night with 64 dogs, many of them puppies, and 16 cats. They only wish they could've taken more. "We'd get there Sunday, and they'd tell us they would put them down if we didn't taken them. You took the ones on the chopping block. We were in tears in the shelters," said Gaquer.

Gaquer can't help but smile when he looks at the faces saved. Now, they'll get the medical attention and love they deserve. If not for the cross country trip, these four-legged friends wouldn't have a chance. "We got the animals back safely and that's all that matters," said Gaquer.

If you are interested in adopting a pet call the Tri-County Humane Society at (561)482-8110. Most of the animals from Oklahoma should be ready for adoption the first week of June.
