Animal rights activists hold rally to save shelter pets

STUART, FL (WFLX) - Across the country, animal rights activists held rallies in honor of the event "Just One Day".

A local event took place Tuesday starting at 11 a.m. at the Roosevelt bridge in Stuart.

The goal is to make the country's animal shelters "no kill" zones, meaning animals won't be put down with euthanasia.

According to event organizers, at least 10,411 animals in shelters are put down each day.

They hope euthanasia technicians will take pictures of adoptable pets and post them on social media, rather than put down the animals.

About fifty shelters in Florida are participating in the event. One of those shelters is The Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
