Owner charged with leaving dogs in hot car

PORT ST LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - Carl Anthony Castilow of Avon Park faces two counts of animal cruelty charges after two dogs were left in a hot car, according to a police report.

Police say on Thursday afternoon around 4 p.m., Castolow left his two dogs, Dotty an 8-year-old Shepherd mix and Stoli an 8-year-old golden retriever, in his Cadillac at Kaiser Keiser University College of Golf and Sport Management. They say three of the car windows were partially open while Castilow went inside the college.

According to a police report, a witness walking past the vehicle noticed the dogs. Police say that the witness along with college staff and Castilow eventually went to the car and removed the dogs.

The animals were treated with wet towels and ice packs in an attempt to cool them down.  Officers say Dotty succumbed to her injuries from heat exhaustion and died at the scene.  Stoli did not make it through the night.

Police say Castilow was distraught over the death of the dogs and said he 'loved' them and thought he had taken  'all the necessary precautions'.  He repeated to police their deaths were an accident.
