RIVIERA BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Police say they have identified two suspects in connection with the shooting of a 2-year old girl in Riviera Beach.
The toddler is recovering at St. Mary's Medical Center after getting caught in the crossfire of a shooting that happened Thursday night.
Investigators say the child was in a car being driven by her grandmother. Riding with them were the child's mother, a sibling and a still unidentified male.
Police say the male noticed someone following them and asked the grandmother to pull over into a parking lot of an apartment building in the 1100 block of West 32nd Street in Riviera Beach.
When a small black car pulled in behind the grandmother, the man inside her car got out. Police said a male in the black car left that vehicle and the pair began firing at each other. One of the shots struck the toddler.
Her grandmother then drove the child to the hospital.
The gunmen fled.
The toddler is listed in critical but stable condition. "The goal is to apprehend the two suspects, while at the same time protecting anyone who comes forward and helps this investigation. Certainly, we believe that everyone in the community would want to do that. That's the right thing to do," said Riviera Beach Police spokeswoman Rose Anne Brown.
Police consider the gunmen armed and dangerous. They have not yet identified them or released their descriptions.
Anyone with information should contact Riviera Beach Police at (561) 845-4123 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
