City threatens to block storm drains

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - The city of West Palm Beach is asking for more than $200,000 from the Palm Beach County school district.

The city says the district owes it money for more than a year's worth of storm drain fees.

City officials are giving the district a July 1 deadline to pay back the money, or else they will disconnect drains to at least nine public schools, according to our news partners at the Palm Beach Post.

But the school district claims it doesn't have to pay the fee.

The district stopped paying the fee in April of last year. The move was sparked by a 2012 state appeals court decision involving a Key West community college.

The judge in the case gave school districts "sovereign immunity" from having to pay storm water fees.

To avoid the threat posed by block off storm drains, the school district filed a lawsuit last Friday. In the lawsuit is an injunction against the city disconnecting the schools.

No hearing date has been set yet for the injunction lawsuit.
