Thousands honor fallen firefighters at Prescott vigil

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

People are still coming out to the fire station memorial at all hours to honor the 19 firefighters who died while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire on Sunday.

But earlier Tuesday night, many of the memorial visitors were just down the road.

More than 4,000 people showed up to the vigil at Prescott High School. It's where several of the firefighters who died went to school.

Tonight was a chance for this small community to honor their local heroes.

All 19 of the firefighters' names were read, and after each name, the crowd cheered.

Nineteen purple balloons were also released in their honor; they tell me purple represents a fallen firefighter.

The football stadium was full of hugs, tears, and lots of love.

As day three comes to an end, many people are still trying to cope with what happened here. They say they want the families of the victims to know they will continue supporting them for the months to come.

"I've been watching people come in crying not holding it together very well, and that's what we are here for to let that out.  To share that and to just lean on each other.  And we all feel this sense of loss in our community."
