A bit more sunshine today, but we're not in the clear yet

Posted: Updated:

Locally:  We're back into a typical work week post-holiday, and it's shaping up to be a good deal better than the last.  The stationary front that brought significant rainfall over the past 7 days is finally pushing off to the north and east, and slowly taking the Gulf moisture with it.  Throughout the day today, expect an isolated shower early, with otherwise mostly cloudy skies.  This afternoon, with humidity levels upwards of 80%, peeks of sunshine, and heat building back into the mid-80s Upstate and low 80s in the mountains, we will likely spark some showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.  The most likely places will be in the Upstate and NE Georgia.  A few of the storms could produce gusty winds and isolated downpours, but a widespread event is not expected.  Through the week, we'll continue to see more sunshine and move back into the upper 80s.  As this happens, the moisture left on the ground will continue to evaporate, giving us very humid air along with a chance for afternoon storms every day.

In the Tropics:  Tropical Storm Chantal has formed more than 500 miles east of Barbados, and is slowly headed NW toward the Dominican Republic. Typically, tropical systems that move directly to the west or northwest have a hard time gaining strength.  By the time she makes a northward turn to our coastline close to the weekend, we're looking for some scattered rain and lots of clouds, but the "Tropical Storm" label should have worn off by then.
