Drug drop off expanded in PBC

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - If you have unused prescription drugs in your medicine cabinet, you can dispose of them for free.

The Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition added six more locations for you to drop off your old drugs so they stay out of the wrong hands. There are now 22 pill drop box sites in Palm Beach County. That's the most of any county in the state.

Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem, and has even led to break-ins at homes known to have painkillers. Even a leftover painkiller from a previous surgery could pose a risk to you or someone else. Seven Floridians die every day from prescription drug abuse.

A few years ago, Palm Beach County was the heart of the nationwide pill epidemic. Since then, there's been a crackdown on doctors, pharmacists, and pain clinics.

The unwanted medication can also pose environmental problems if disposed improperly.

"Disposing of prescription medication down the toilet or sink can be harmful for the water supply and toxic if undigested through tap water," said Jeff Kadel, Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition.

Palm Beach County is encouraging you to use a safe disposal site. The coalition is declaring Thursday, July 11th as PBC RX Drop Box Awareness Day. You can drop off your unwanted drugs at law enforcement agencies from Boca Raton to North Palm and as far west as Belle Glade. There will be no questions asked.

You can drop off prescriptions, over the counter medications, vitamins, samples, medications for pets, ointments, lotions, and liquid medication in plastic or leak proof containers. You can not drop off needles, thermometers, bloody or infectious waste, medication from businesses or clinics, hydrogen peroxide, aerosol cans, inhalers, or medication in glass containers.

If you can't make the drop off date, you can search for one.
