Slow-Moving Storms through this Evening

Posted: Updated:

Stormy Afternoon & Evening:  High humidity and afternoon heating are lighting the fuse on the development of a few strong storms this afternoon.  The hit and miss nature of where these storms are popping is typical of a summer afternoon in July.

Any storm that flares up will produce very heavy rain, frequent lightning in a short period of time.  Due to an unstable air mass, the storms will also have the potential to cause wind damage.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for our entire area until 10pm.

Incredible Rain Amounts since June 1st20.70" is the number.  That's much rain has been observed at the Greenville-Spartanburg airport.  There's no doubt that many other towns and local rain gauges have observed similar amounts of rain.  The surplus stands at +18.29" since January 1st.

In Asheville, 19.25" of rain has fell since June first pushing the yearly surplus to +23.23" at the airport in south-central Buncombe county.

Rainy Days Far Outnumber Dry Days:  In terms of days, it has rained on 34 of the of 46 days from June 1st through the 16th of July.  Those were compiled using the total number of days GSP has recorded at least a trace of rainfall since June 1st.  More than 1" fell on 7 of the 46 days.  Daily rainfall records were broken on June 9th and June 18th.
