OSHP part of traffic text alert system

(Toledo News Now) -

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has joined a new alert system to help keep drivers safe.

Drivers can sign up online and then receive text alerts on their phones, warning them of accidents or road closures.

OSHP officials say they like the Nixle system. When a trooper sees a crash or a problem area, they send the information to Nixle, which in turn warns drivers.

The system is up-to-the-minute, and uses a geo-locating system to determine if drivers are close to the affected area, giving them time to exit the highway and find another way.

But troopers do have one important piece of advice for drivers:

"You need to make sure you are paying attention to the roadway. If you do get a text alert, maybe have a passenger read the text as you're driving down the roadway," said Sgt. Rick Vitte.
