Spurrier: Key players may not play on opening night

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier is not a happy camper because a rash of injuries have kept several of his key players from fully participating in practice.

USC's top returning wide out, Bruce Ellington, and Damiere Byrd were sidelined with hamstring issues.

All-American junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is dealing with a bruised shoulder that forced him to miss Saturday's scrimmage. At the time, the injury was not considered to be serious.

"If it don't come around real soon, we may play without him for the first game," said Spurrier.

At this point, with opening night against the North Carolina Tarheels just 17 days away, Spurrier wants his best guys practicing on the field if they're not seriously hurt. Otherwise, they might not play opening night.

"So we got a bunch of hurt guys that act like they're really hurt," said Spurrier. "Right now, they may not play."

When asked if his comments were a message to those players to get healthy, Spurrier demurred.

"Well, I don't know. Why don't y'all go talk to them? But no, I'll handle it. I'll handle those guys," said Spurrier.

USC opens up the 2013 college football season on Aug. 29 at Williams-Brice Stadium.
