Health department preparing for more immunizations

Metro school officials predicted it, and they were right. More than half of all seventh graders don't have their required immunization shots more than a week into the new school year.

The district has sent home a letter to families of kids who don't have their shots yet, and the letter made it clear that, if they didn't get those shots within five days of receiving the letter, they wouldn't be allowed to go back to school.

This has the Metro Health Department bracing for a big crowd, and doctors say the biggest reason for the lack of shots is that parents simply don't realize how important the shots are.

"Disease prevention is key to public health, and vaccinations have proven to be very important in preventing infectious diseases. I mean, diseases like measles, whooping cough - that many years ago people used to die from - can now be prevented by getting vaccinations," said Dr. Afua Boaten, with United Neighborhood Health Services.

If your child needs a vaccine or needs their immunization records transferred to a certificate, the Metro Health Department is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
