Boca police warning parents of dangerous school drop off habit

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - You know the feeling: A hectic morning, you park your car, you get out and walk your kids into school.

But what'd you leave on the front seat? Maybe something a thief would love?!

Boca Raton Police have put out a video they hope goes viral warning parents not to leave belongings in their cars in school drop-off zones.

"A lot of times, we start saying things, and you sound like Charlie Brown's teacher," said Boca Raton Police spokesman Mark Economou. "People stop listening."

Claudia Saldana-Riautaud says she always brings her purse with her, and did so Thursday night as she picked her son up from daycare. "I know of issues where people will break into cars," she said.

"You're just running in to pick up your kid or they forgot their lunch, and you're just running in," said Economou. "That's all it takes."

"In a world ruled by social media, Boca Police say videos with catchy tunes and clever graphics are becoming a necessary tool for law enforcement.

Viral videos are a new way to reach people tired of hearing the same old warnings. "You might not be able to get the beat out of your head after a couple of times of watching it," Economou said, of the video they produced. "Hopefully, all the folks in the city and the district will share it with their friends."

Boca Police say they haven't seen a rash of school drop off burglaries, and hope this will stop one from starting.

Boca police will be out in force on Monday doing a school detail.

They'll be running radar in school zones and out talking to parents, giving out tips on how to stay safe this school year.
