Holiday Inn Express evacuated due to suspicious device

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A suspicious device that caused anxious moments at an Indian River County motel turned out to be a hoax, according to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.

The device, with protruding wires, was found near a vending machine at the Holiday Inn Express at 9400 19th Lane in Vero Beach.

It was cylindrical and wrapped in electrical tape and contained a putty substance.

According to the sheriff's office, the device was surrounded by sandbags and a controlled detonation took place at approximately 1 p.m.

Investigators say after examining the remnants, they determined the device was not a bomb.

The hotel had been evacuated as a precaution and traffic on 19th Lane was diverted.
