New program helps overweight pregnant women

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

A new program at the Cleveland Clinic is aimed at overweight women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant.

Members of the medical team say that the program was created to address a growing problem and may very well be the only one like it in the country.

It's estimated about half of expecting moms are overweight.

The goal of the program is to improve pregnancy outcomes through medically monitored weight management and nutritional guidance during the preconceptual, pregnancy and post-partum stages.

Patients meet with weight loss specialists and dieticians throughout their pregnancy and after.

They also learn how to lose the weight after and teach their children healthy habits.

Doctors say that maternal obesity can lead to an array of health problems for both the expectant mother and the baby including premature birth, diabetes in childhood, more complicated deliveries and high blood pressure in the mother.
