ST LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - U.S. Congressman Patrick Murphy is touring the Treasure Coast's toxic waterways.
Congressman Murphy will take a helicopter tour of the Indian River lagoon and the St. Lucie estuary.
Meanwhile, a joint effort is being made by the St. Lucie and Martin County commissioners to try to get Governor Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency.
During Tuesday's commission meeting, staff members were directed to work with each other with hopes of coming up with a plan to prevent water from Lake Okeechobee from flowing north to the lagoon.
Declaring a state of emergency would allow county authorities to apply for aid and try to restore the waterways.
Commissioners may consider putting a device in place which would prevent the flow of more pollutants from the discharges into the lagoon, as well as install pumps that would push saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean.
Crews would currently use pumps placed by the mosquito control district.
