FPL warning of scam targeting customers' credit card information

Posted:

JUNO BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Officials at Florida Power and Light are warning customers about a scam targeting their credit card information.

According to FPL, customers around the state are getting phone calls from people claiming to work for utility companies, including FPL. The caller claims to be an employee calling in regards to a past due bill. The caller then says the customer must provide their credit card information or their power will be shut off.

FPL says its employees will never call customers asking for their personal information unless the customer initiates the phone call.

The utility company has contacted law enforcement agencies across the state to make them aware of the situation.

If you get one of these phone calls, do not give your personal information or credit card number to the caller.

You're asked to call police right away.

FPL also asks you call the utility company and alert them about what happened. You can find out how to contact FPL at FPL.com/contact.

Officials also ask that you report the phone call to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at 1-800-435-7352 or the Financial Fraud Task Force at stopfraud.gov.
