FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -

A self-help author who served prison time for the deaths of three people following a sweat lodge ceremony he led wants his appeal dismissed.

James Arthur Ray made the request a week ahead of oral arguments before the state Court of Appeals.

Ray says he wants to avoid the possibility of a retrial and resentencing. He maintains that his convictions on three counts of negligent homicide were flawed.

Ray's attorneys had challenged some jury instructions and the conduct of prosecutors.

The state Attorney General's Office disputed the defense's characterization of the case. The office says it will drop a cross-appeal if Ray's request is granted.

Kirby Brown, of Westtown, NY, and James Shore, of Milwaukee, died in the 2009 sweat lodge. Liz Neuman, of Prior Lake, MN died nine days later.
