Delray explores county fire services

DELRAY BEACH, FL (WFLX)--  The city of Delray Beach is exploring the possibility of contracting fire rescue services with Palm Beach County.

The city currently has its own fire rescue department which provides services for the municipality as well as for the towns of Highland Beach and Gulf Stream.

Delray Beach Fire-Rescue Chief Danielle Connor says the city wants to find out how much Palm Beach County would charge in fees for comparable fire rescue services.

Delray Beach says that it would study the proposal and see if contracting services with Palm Beach County is feasible.

Chief Connor tells that after she receives Palm Beach County Fire Rescue's fee proposal she will take about two months to review the proposal based on the " impact on public safety, services currently provided to the community, and economic viability."

The Delray Beach City Council will make the final decision on whether the city retains its fire department or contract for services.

Chief Connor says that previously when Palm Beach County has taken over fire rescue services from a municipality the local firefighters have been absorbed into the county.
