Final days of summer bring a mixed bag of weather

Posted: Updated:

After a taste of Autumn last weekend and into the early days of this week, we're back to temperatures in the 80s Upstate, and upper 70s in the mountains.  Today, a broad area of high pressure continues to sit over the southeast, bringing mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies into the Upstate and NE Georgia.  Western NC still deals with a bit more cloudiness, though the close proximity to the high will allow for some peeks of sunshine to help break up the clouds a bit.  Western NC towns could see an isolated shower later today, and though we're expecting most of the Upstate to remain dry, an isolated shower is also possible north of the I-85 line.

Friday, we warm up even further.  Upstate will move back into the middle 80s, while Western NC remains in the upper 70s.  Once again, we're expecting to see partly cloudy skies all around, with overall dry weather.  A stray shower will once again be possible in the mountains.  Friday night football for all our local high school teams should be dry and comfortable, though the cloud cover will begin to increase throughout the later evening hours.

After a picture-perfect fall weekend last week, there are changes in store for this weekend.  We have a cold front pushing toward our area, expected to pass through sometime late Saturday night.  For us, this means that starting midday Saturday, we'll start to see a few showers in the mountains, and eventually moving into the Upstate through the afternoon.  We'll have mostly cloudy skies and highs only reaching the low to middle 70s for everyone.  Showers and even a few thunderstorms become more widespread as the front gets closer.  With some potential development in the tropics, this front could help usher in some tropical moisture, giving us a dose of some of those scattered downpours we remember so well from the summer.  Depending on the timing of the frontal passage, we could end up with a few lingering rain showers early Sunday, and then be dry and sunny by the end of the day.  That's the best case scenario right now.  Worst case scenario is that the front slows down a bit and continues throwing clouds and rain our way through the end of the weekend, before finally clearing out on Monday.  We'll have a better estimate on timing as new data comes in.
