Cat on Turnpike causes fatal crash

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A person has died and a 35-year-old Tequesta man is in critical condition after he tried to rescue a cat on Florida's Turnpike near Pompano Beach Monday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Michael James Schneider was traveling north on the turnpike south of Sawgrass Expressway when he noticed a cat in the road.

He pulled off the road and tried to rescue the cat when another car approached, said Sgt. Sergeant Mark G. Wysocky, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of the 2010 Honda Accord, was unable to stop and ran into Schneider's 2003 Toyota Tundra and a guardrail.

Schneider was thrown from top of the Honda and unto the grass shoulder, Wysocky said.

The driver, whose gender and identity have not been released pending notification of next of kin, and Schneider were taken to Broward Health North Hospital in Pompano Beach.

The Accord driver died at the hospital. Schneider remains in critical condition, Wysocky said.

The accident is under investigation.
