Vietnam veteran wins $750k

DELRAY BEACH, FL (WFLX)-- A jury has awarded a Vietnam vet hundreds of thousands of dollars after he was fired from his Delray Beach job.

Robert DeSisto, formerly of the Army's 101st Airborne, suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. He sued the city of Delray Beach, his employer for 29 years. They wanted him to take a commercial driver's test for his job in the water department.

"I would never be able to pass it, because, if I had the instructor right next to me, which he would have been to go on 95, I'd be afraid for the citizens and myself, I'd have a panic attack," said DeSisto.

Though the city did not fire him, he says he was effectively forced out by the stipulation he take the exam.

Thursday, he won his lawsuit. A six-person Palm Beach County jury awarded him 256 grand in lost wages and 500 grand more for pain and suffering, finding the city failed to accommodate him.

This wasn't for the money. This is for me telling the truth, " said DeSisto.

He says he hopes the jury's award is a warning sign to other cities when it comes to considering what vets have gone through before they give them assignments.

Delray Beach city officials say they have no comment because this is still an active case.

They are allowed to appeal and DeSisto's attorney fully expects them to.
