Wake boarder drowns after being pinned at bottom of dam

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (WFLX) - The body of a 23-year-old man was pulled from the water near Alternate A1A and Lighthouse Drive in Palm Beach Gardens Thursday at approximately 5:10 pm.

A man was spotted in a spillway, and a firefighter driving by was flagged down for help. Other fire rescue crews were dispatched at 3:51 p.m.

A number of firefighters tried in vain to save the man and received minor injuries during the rescue attempt. "They were under that water for a pretty good amount of time to try and pull themselves out of that vortex. They were under there a little bit, and we had somebody who had a knee injury, as well," said Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Division Chief Keith Bryer.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office worked together to assist the adult male that had been pinned in a dam and submerged underwater for several minutes.

At approximately 5:25 pm, authorities recovered the man's body after being submerged for over 25 minutes. He was immediately transported to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to Palm Beach Sheriff's Office.

According to PBSO, the deceased and his friend were wake boarding when suddenly a rush of water caught the deceased unexpectedly, and he was pinned below the waterline at the bottom of the dam.

His friend attempted to pull the deceased from where he was pinned, but was unsuccessful.

No foul play suspected. Palm Beach Sheriff's Office have not released the identity of the man who died, since detectives have still not notified next of kin.
