Driver in deadly hit & run located in Vero Beach

VERO BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Robert Bates, the driver of a semi-truck, who allegedly hit and killed two people on the Florida Turnpike, was located in Vero Beach Thursday afternoon, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Officials say Vincent Mathews and Mariah King, both of Polk County, were changing a flat tire on their car when they were hit by the tractor-trailer driven by Bates, Monday night. The couple died at the scene.

FHP investigators say Bates, on the advice of his attorneys, did not make a statement, but did reveal the location of the tractor-trailer.

The tractor-trailer has been recovered in the Central Florida area, according to FHP investigators.

Police say Bates is not under arrest at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation and charges are pending.
