SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A Scott City man accused of killing his mother pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Neil Howland waived his arraignment and pleaded not guilty.

His change of venue request was granted and sent to the Supreme Court for assignment.

Authorities believe Howland killed his mother, Cynthia Canoy, 48, of Scott City.

According to court documents, Howland admitted getting mad at his mom, sending his girlfriend and their infant son out to get gas, and then strangling Canoy.

During questioning Howland admitted to putting Canoy's body in her vehicle with her two dogs, driving the vehicle to a cornfield, pouring gasoline on it, and setting it on fire with his mother's body and the two dogs inside, according to the probable cause statement.

Howland was charged with the Class A felony of first degree murder, the Class D felony of tampering with evidence, the Class D felony of abandonment of a corpse, and the Class D felony of knowingly burning.
