Man convicted of 6 Tucson murders executed

PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

Arizona has executed its second death-row inmate in two weeks.

Robert Glen Jones Jr. was given a lethal dose of pentobarbital Wednesday morning at the state prison in Florence. He was pronounced dead at 10:52 a.m.

Jones's last words were: "Love and respect my friends and family, and hope my friends are never here," the Arizona Department of Corrections said.

Jones declined a special last meal so he was given the same meal provided to the other inmates at the prison, which consisted of a beef patty, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, a serving of carrots, two slices of wheat bread, a slice of glazed cake and a powdered juice drink. The meal was served to him Tuesday night.

The 43-year-old Jones was convicted in the shooting deaths of six people during two armed robberies in Tucson weeks apart in 1996.

He and co-defendant Scott Nordstrom were accused of killing two people at a smoke shop and four others at the Firefighters Union Hall. They also were accused of stealing at least $1,300 from cash registers.

The two were arrested months later after the co-defendant's brother, David Nordstrom, who was the getaway driver, told authorities about the crimes.

On June 26, 1998, a jury found him guilty on six first-degree murder charges as well as robbery and assault charges.

On Dec. 7, 1998, he was sentenced to six consecutive death sentences, as well as 144.5 years, according to Attorney General Tom Horne.

Jones' execution came hours after the U.S. Supreme Court denied motions for a stay of execution and a rehearing of his case.

Scott Nordstrom remains on Arizona's death row.
