Woman in motorized chair killed while crossing street

PALM SPRINGS, FL (WFLX) - A woman in a motorized chair was killed attempting to cross a busy road Monday in Palm Springs.

Around 9:30 a.m., local police and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded to reports of a woman being struck by a vehicle as she was attempting to cross Congress Avenue at Greenbrier Drive in Palm Springs.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, a Dodge Ram driven by Karl Fishman, 62, of West Palm Beach, Fla., was traveling south on Congress Avenue.

An 81-year-old woman from Palm Springs, Fla., was traveling west across Congress Avenue under a red pedestrian signal.

As the truck entered the intersection, the front of the motorized chair struck the driver's side rear of the Dodge.  The trailer that the truck was pulling then hit the motorized chair, ejecting the woman.

The victim was flown to Delray Medical Center but later died around 2:15 p.m.

The police report does not indicate if any charges will be filed.

Police have not notified the woman's next of kin.
