Christian Medina, teen killed in crash, laid to rest

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - Hundreds of people are expected to attend the funeral of Christian Medina, the Lincoln Park Academy baseball player who was killed in an auto accident while on his way to school, Monday morning.

The funeral, which is open to the public, begins at 11 a.m. at St. Lucie Catholic Church in the 200 block of SW Prima Vista Boulevard.

On Sunday, more than 600 people gathered at Tradition Field for a memorial service to remember the 16-year-old high school student.

Fifteen-year-old twins Timothy and Peter Green, Medina's teammates who were injured in the accident when Medina lost control his car and hit a tree and utility pole last month, attended the service.

During the service, coaches shared stories about Medina's remarkable skills as a player and as a person.

Matt Walters, a Lincoln Park Academy coach, said Medina's memory will be with the team when it returns to the field.

"We're not necessarily playing to win for Christian, we're playing to honor Christian and make sure that we're giving everything that he gave everyday and try our best to take on the extra responsibilities of him being missing," Walters said.

Walters retired Medina's number from the program and gave his Number 8 jersey to his mother.

Medina died from his injuries several days after the accident.
