Local Filipino family waits for answers

Posted:

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - Many local Filipinos are turning to social media to hear about the well-being of their loved ones following the destructive typhoon.

One Lake Worth family is finding relief after hearing family in the Philippines is accounted for and doing okay.

Rose Ibalarrosa says all of her immediate family is in the Philippines, including her parents, sibling, cousins and aunts and uncles.

She waited nearly three days to hear if they were alive. Sunday morning, she got a Facebook message that said her family is okay.

But, she says, Facebook has also delivered bad news to some friends who learned through a message that a loved one has been lost.

Ibalarrosa says someone had to find her family, walk miles to an area with cell phone service, and text someone in another country who has internet. That person could then send her a message.

It's a lot of effort, but it's the only way she says she can get answers. "I just cried, and it was a relief. It's just like a miracle. It was like Christmas morning, you know, and you get the present that you really want."

Ibalarrosa is still waiting to hear from some in-laws and close friends.

The local Filipino community is planning fundraisers to send aid to the Philippines.

A garage sale will be held Saturday at Auction America in West Palm Beach at 9 a.m.

The public is asked to bring items to sell in addition to purchasing items.

There will also be a large auction on November 23 at 1pm

The public is also asked to donate any auction items.
