Richmond pastor slams 'dumb thief' after church burglary

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond Police say thieves hit the Temple of Judah Church off Venable Street over the weekend. Pastor Melvin Williams says the crooks left the big items like TVs and went straight for the church safe.

"Whoever it was a dumb thief," said Pastor Melvin Williams.

The suspects were hoping for a treasure trove of cash.

"You wouldn't rob a church on Sunday morning," said Pastor Williams. "At least give us time to take the offering."

The church has since replaced the locks. Pastor Williams says the suspects had a short window. He notes the church is open for prayer from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

"The thing that hurt the most is all they had to do was ask," said Pastor Williams. "If they were hungry we would have fed them. If they were naked we would have clothed them. If they had no place to go we would have gotten them an hotel. They didn't have to steal."

The church says the crooks ended up with legal documents and deed information. If you have any information call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
