Record setting freediver dies during competition

BAHAMAS (WFLX) - A Florida native, who broke the U.S. constant weight record for freediving, has died during a competition.

Nicholas Mevoli was swimming in a tournament in the Bahamas Sunday. After completing his 72-meter dive, the swimmer had trouble breathing and lost consciousness.

Switzerland's federation for breath-holding diving said he likely died due to a depth-related lung injury.

Mevoli was 32 years old.
