Storm Update: An Ice Storm Warning is now in place for Henderson, Western Polk, Western Rutherfordton, Yancey and Mitchell counties from midnight tonight until noon Tuesday. 1/4-1/3" of ice accumulation through mid-morning could result in difficult or impossible travel, as well as damage to power lines and trees. If you must travel, pack a safety kit with things to keep warm as well as a flashlight and water.
A Freezing Rain Advisory is in place for Haywood, Transylvania, Southern Jackson, Macon, Polk, Rutherford, McDowell from 9pm Monday – 9am Tuesday.
Other areas of the Upstate and Western NC will be impacted by this storm as well, here's what you can expect from the storm:
Starting the day with sunshine, clouds quickly increase with highs reaching the upper 30s in Western NC, and low 40s Upstate. We should remain dry through the day and evening. Late tonight, moisture from the Gulf brings scattered rain showers to our area, but shortly after midnight we're expecting the rain to change to freezing rain for Western NC, and a bit of sleet for some areas Upstate. Morning travel Tuesday should be done with caution.
As we warm into the upper 30s and low 40s Tuesday, straight rain moves back in by 9am, and could be heavy at times. We'll also become quite windy by late Tuesday. Tuesday night should remain above freezing for everyone, so rain will continue, giving us overall rain totals around 2-4".
Wednesday morning rain continues Upstate, with rain and possibly sleet in Western NC. As the system pulls north, cold air settles in leaving lingering moisture as snow. Upstate, we're not expecting snow accumulation, though snow showers are likely through late morning and early afternoon. Western NC looks to see some accumulation, around an inch of snow for most, with counties bordering Tennessee accumulating potentially up to 3".
Late Wednesday evening we'll start to see much clearer skies move in, dropping temperatures into the 20s overnight area-wide. Thanksgiving Day should be cold, but gorgeous locally, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 30s and low 40s.
