Thanksgiving travel causes backups for Sky Harbor, Valley freeways

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The backup of cars headed to Sky Harbor International Airport forced the Department of Public Safety to close the airport exit off State Route 143.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said DPS closed the Sky Harbor exit off to clear the backup. Phoenix police were directing traffic at the airport, and despite the long lines outside, everything was running pretty smoothly inside.

Most flights were either on time, or even early, in fact.

People traveling from all over, including Canada and the East Coast, said they didn't experience the weather delays everyone was expecting.

The delay came once they were ready to get picked up.

"We had an hour to spare, and we were hoping that was going to be enough," said Derek Anderson, who dropped someone off at the airport.

"I wish I had people waiting for me like this but, unfortunately, I just have one car waiting for me," said traveler Jay Amba.

ADOT said the Sky Harbor exit on the 143 opened up a few hours after it was initially closed.
