Runaway kangaroo returned to Ohio Co. family

An Ohio County family is happy and relieved their runaway pet is back home after hopping away Sunday night.

The Hines family, of Fordsville, spent most of Sunday night searching for their pet near the woods in their area, but their animal isn't your typical house pet.

They say they have dreamed of starting a petting zoo for the last few years and recently bought a one-year-old kangaroo named Roo.

We're told the kangaroo was outside on a leash when the family dog spooked him. The kangaroo slipped out of his harness and took off into the woods.

The family called Ohio County Dispatch to be on the look out, and around 12:30 Monday afternoon, a family friend found the animal near a deer stand on the family's property. They was able to catch him and bring him home safely.

The Ohio County Sheriff's Office says they were surprised when they got the call.

"I have 30 plus years in law enforcement and I have never got a call about a kangaroo," said Major Steve Kimble with the sheriff's office. "It kind of reminded me of earlier this year we had a call that a bear had been sited in Ohio County and sure enough that was true."

The sheriff's office says they're checking with the game warden about any guidelines that are already in place to keep to keep a kangaroo as a pet.
