FLAMINGO, FL (WFLX)-- About 30 pilot whales were spotted Tuesday afternoon in Florida Bay near the Everglades around 30 miles from land, said Kim Amendola, spokeswoman for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
NOAA will launch a rescue mission Wednesday morning, although Amendola said that until the team reaches the whales and assess the situation, they won't know whether it is possible to save the mammals. She said that some whales have already died.
During the rescue operation, air traffic will be rerouted away from the area in order not to "spook" the whales, Amendola said.
The whales were spotted about 30 miles from the town of Flamingo in Monroe County.
