Lopicola's Friday sentencing delayed

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Former WPTV NewsChannel 5 weatherman Rob Lopicola faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced by a Palm Beach County judge on December 20.

The sentencing had been scheduled for Friday, but was delayed earlier this week, a bailiff said.

It was not immediately clear why it had been delayed.

In October, a jury convicted Lopicola of lewd and lascivious conduct and computer pornography after he was accused of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Lopicola testified he had met the teenager through an advertisement on Craigslist, but he wouldn't have pursued the relationship if he had known the teenager was 15-years-old. "I do like young guys, late teens and early 20s. I have dated guys in their 30s and 40s, as well, but when it comes especially to fantasy, I generally like them younger," Lopicola said during his testimony.

Lopicola said he never met the teenager in person, but the jury felt crude text messages exchanged between them were enough to convict him.

In November, Lopicola accepted a plea deal on a separate count of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

He has not been sentenced on the separate charge.
