New security measures in place for Phoenix Open

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is encouraging fans to not bring any bags to this year's golf tournament as the security has changed.

A Phoenix Open spokesperson said the PGA Tour now requires all tournaments to implement new security measures to enhance public safety and make it easier for fans to get into the tournament.

Items NOT allowed:

  • Backpacks
  • Chair bags
  • Lawn chairs
  • Seat cushions
  • Pets (except for service animals)
  • Bicycles
  • Opaque bags larger than 6" x 6" x 6"
  • Clear tote bags, plastic, vinyl larger than 12" x 6" x 12"
  • Video cameras
  • Radios, televisions or other electronic items that make noise
  • Computers, laptops
  • Whistles, horns, noise makers
  • Signs, banners
  • Bringing in food or drinks (except for infant or medical needs)
  • Coolers
  • Weapons
  • Fireworks
  • Illegal substances
  • Laser pointers
  • Poles, rods

Items that ARE allowed:

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12" (They will be available at parking shuttle locations and at the main entrance to the tournament.)
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag
  • Small clutch bags/wristlets, approximately the size of a hand
  • All phones, tablets and PDA's must be on silent mode
  • Sealed bottled water in approved bags
  • Still camera without case and with lens smaller than 6" (Monday-Wednesday only)
  • Umbrellas without sleeve
  • Collapsible chairs without chair bags
  • Portable radios with headset
  • Strollers, plastic baby bottles and other baby supplies
  • Binoculars without case

Non-approved bags

  • Backpack
  • Binocular Case
  • Camera Case
  • Clear Backpack
  • Tinted Plastic Bag
  • Printed Pattern Plastic Bag
  • Fanny Pack
  • Seat Cushion
  • Oversized Tote Bag

Organizers said exceptions will be made for fans needing to bring medical supplies and items to meet infant needs into the tournament.

Everyone attending the tournament will be subject to search at the entrances and on the course at any time and metal detecting wands will be used at each entrance gate on everyone including volunteers, spectators, working staff, and media.

This public safety measure is also used at other large venues, including the Arizona Cardinal's stadium and other NFL stadiums, the University of Michigan, Penn State University and Michigan State University.
