LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - A 70-year-old man is behind bars after Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control investigators say he beat his dog and trapped her inside a luggage carrier on top of his car on Wednesday.

The Jack Russell mix named Luna is now recovering at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control.

"Witnesses reported that a gentleman was beating his dog and then locked her in the luggage carrier," Capt. Dave Walesky with Animal Care and Control said.

PBSO Deputies arrived at the Lake Worth Laundromat after a witness called saying he saw Vito Signorelli beating the dog and putting her into the container.

"I think it was mean and bad. We should put him in there and see how he feels," witness Znaida Luna said.

According to police reports, Signorelli even tried striking one of the deputies during the arrest.

Luna appears to be in good condition physically, authorities say. But she is traumatized.

"It never ceases to amaze me what people will do to animals," Capt. Walesky said.

Luna is timid and scared after the experience and frightened of people.

But Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Director Dianne Suave is confident she will be rehabilitated.

"I think she will come around. It is very obvious she is really traumatized right now," Sauve said.

Walesky says if Signorelli does not relinquish the dog to them, they will try to take her through court order.

Signorelli is behind bars on a $1,000 bond.
