PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The bridge at Multnomah Falls - one of Oregon's most popular tourist destinations - will likely be closed several months, officials announced Friday.

A boulder fell from the surrounding cliffs and smashed through a piece of the Benson Bridge in the early morning hours of Jan. 9.

No one was injured.

The damage is limited to a 4'-by-4' section of the pedestrian bridge and railings, but the damage is enough to close it for safety reasons indefinitely.

The trail leading to the bridge is closed at both sections of the bridge until repairs can be completed. The popular Wahkeena to Multnomah Falls Loop and the Horsetail Falls to Multnomah Falls Loop are also closed.

Despite those closures, the Multnomah Falls Lodge and Visitors Center are open for business. Visitors can also hike the Larch Mountain Trail No. 441 up to Benson Bridge a good view of Multnomah Falls.

Federal officials said the design for repairs will align with the historic character of the site, which is part of the Historic Columbia River Highway National Landmark.
