MARICOPA, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

Authorities have identified the man who was shot and wounded by police following a car chase.

DPS said the suspect is 29-year-old Lee Patrick Hafer.

The officer is Christopher Evans, who has been with the Maricopa Police Department for six years and has a total of 16 years in law enforcement, according to police spokesman Ricardo Alvarado.

Authorities received a call about 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 21 from the man's wife, who said her husband responded to some bad news he received by threatening suicide.

She said he had a weapon when he drove away from their home.

A police officer initiated a pursuit, but the man refused to stop until his car's tires were deflated by stopsticks.

Maricopa police said the man reportedly had a weapon and threatened to shoot himself. Evans shot the man in the chest near White and Parker Road and Honeycutt Road.

Hafer is in critical condition in the hospital.

No officers were hurt.
