Red Hot Chili Peppers come clean on halftime show

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are confirming their performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show wasn't completely live.

The controversy started when many fans noticed the band did not plug in their instruments.

In a message on the band's Web site, bassist "Flea" says it's their general policy to not "mime" performances, but the NFL made it clear they had to do it that way. "I understand the NFL's stance on this, given they only have a few minutes to set up the stage," said "Flea". There are a zillion things that could go wrong and ruin the sound for the folks watching in the stadium and the TV viewers. There was not any room for argument on this. The NFL does not want to risk their show being botched by bad sound, period."

The band pre-recorded the instruments for their song "Give It Away" but had live vocals.
